Houdongkeng Waterfall (Baishijiao Trail): A Secret Jiao Xi Paradise for Cooling Off

Jiaoxi Township, Yilan County

Sightseeing

Houdongkeng Waterfall is also known as Baishijiao Trail. Many people recommend this place, and it's not far from Jiao Xi, so I decided to check it out.

Houdongkeng Waterfall Entrance

Seeing this "Beware of Monkeys" warning sign, while it's a warning, it also adds to the fun of the place.

Beware of Monkeys Sign

It is said that Houdongkeng got its name from the many wild macaques that used to live here. The entrance area is residential, so parking may not be very convenient. Also, since it is a residential area, please keep the noise down to avoid disturbing the locals.

As you go down the road, there are several stalls selling water, ice cream, fruit, sausages, and more.

Houdong Scenic Spot Stele

The inscription on the large stone reads "Houdong Scenic Spot." Houdongkeng Waterfall is one of the Eighteen Lanyang Scenic Spots.

Follow the signs and soon you will see a staircase on the right that goes down. The road is not easy to walk, so please be careful.

There are already many people eager to play in the water.

Of course, there's more to it than just this, so let's go back and continue on the road we just took!

Here comes the first highlight! The waterfall! It only takes a few minutes to reach from the entrance.

This time I came during the hot summer, so the waterfall's water volume wasn't as spectacular as I had imagined. I heard that during the rainy season, the water volume is very abundant, and the waterfall plunges down from a height of twenty or thirty meters. However, the risk also increases when coming during the rainy season, and the road conditions here are not very good, so it is safer to choose a good weather day, and the photos will be more beautiful.

Next, let's continue up the stairs next to it!

Stairs to the Observation Deck

You still have to pay a price before entering the main event.

Plants Beside the Stairs

After overcoming these 170 steps, you will know that you are still healthy, haha!

I can't help but look back at the scenery. 170 steps, it's worth it! I expect it to be even more different when I get up there, keep going!

There are already many people playing in the water here to cool off.

Observation Deck Water Play Area

It's so beautiful! As expected, it's a secret paradise! The water is very clear, and the little fish in the water will even remove the dead skin from your feet for free.

There is a long line for the Instagram photo spot, but be careful, it's a little dangerous.

There is another area in the back, but it is more difficult to walk.

This is also a water play and summer escape area. The view from here is different again.

For the Houdong Waterfall, I sincerely recommend not bringing strollers, etc., and try to wear comfortable and easy-to-walk shoes, because it is not a flat road! I feel a little strenuous walking myself.

Steep Trail

Come up, enjoy the beautiful scenery, embrace nature, take a break, and then go downstairs!

Steep Stairs

I have to say, these steep stairs make the power of nature even more incredible.
